A 37-year-old Mexican man wanted in San Diego on suspicion of murder was apprehended in Campo, California Friday morning by federal agents after he illegally entered the United States.

Border Patrol agents encountered the suspect, Saul Hernandez-Echeverria, at about 8 AM as he was hiking northbound along with three other Mexican nationals about two miles north of the international border.

After determining that the group was illegally in the country, agents placed them under arrest and transported them to a nearby Border Patrol detention facility.

While agents processed the group of illegal aliens, they discovered that Hernandez had a felony murder warrant, which was issued by the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. The warrant was confirmed and Hernandez is currently awaiting extradition for the warrant.

CBP is the largest uniformed, federal law enforcement agency in the United States. The agency stations over 20,000 CBP officers at access points around the nation – air, land, and sea ports.

By the end of FY 2009, they will have deployed over 20,000 Border Patrol agents between the ports of entry. These forces are supplemented with 980 Air and Marine agents, 2,260 agricultural specialists, and other professionals.
