JNU: How long have you been in Burlesque?
BL: I started performing burlesque in NYC in the mid-nineties, very early on in the neo-burlesque movement. However, I have been putting on shows with music, costumes, storytelling, comedy and stripping since I was a small child, so in essence I feel like I've been doing burlesque my whole life!
JNU: How did you get started in Burlesque?
BL: I met my best friend Bambi the Mermaid, who introduced me to the Sideshow at Coney Island, where they were doing shows that included vaudeville, sideshow and girls. We started performing some crazy, fun duet numbers, which quickly led to performing with Kate Valentine in her show The VaVaVoom Room. I think that is where I first heard the word "burlesque" and began to discover the history behind it.
JNU: What or who are your biggest inspirations and how do they translate into your act?
BL: I take inspiration from a lot of different places, it could be from music, a prop or costume, a movie, something topical from the newspaper, celebrities, politics, a color, an emotion, a theme for a particular show, or just something I love, like cake or chocolate or sex! As far as people go, I think of myself as the beautiful love child of Lucille Ball and Marilyn Monroe! But on top of all that, I am greatly inspired to always be creative by the amazingly talented friends I have in this burlesque community.
JNU: Do you travel for work?
BL: I do travel to perform, in the US: Las Vegas, New Orleans, Miami and Chicago. In Canada, I've been to Toronto, Montreal and a bunch of other little towns. London, Vienna, Braga (Portugal). I'm leaving Nov 17 for two weeks in Britain and Europe. I love traveling to perform and it has been a one of my primary areas of focus lately.
JNU: And if so, which show in which city was the most memorable?
BL: A very amazing and memorable show was at The Life Ball this past May, in Vienna. It was an incredible venue with 45,000 people in attendance. It was the largest AIDS fundraiser in the world. We donated our time for the cause and I was thrilled to have been asked.
JNU: How do you stay fit?
BL: Well performing all the time is in itself a workout, but I also practice and teach Pilates and take dance classes when I can.
JNU: When's your next show in New York? (Or if not New York, then you¹re next show).
BL: Friday November 7th at The Slipper Room
