World Class at the Boston Globe: Madrid
Madrid is the latest travel recap over at the Boston Globe's "World Class" section, courtesy of Boston College senior Michael Polark. He highlights many of the fun aspects of being abroad in Spain, including the very late nights at discotecas (if you consider 6 a.m. to still be nighttime).
Michael kept a blog while he was away called "Aventuras en Madrid!" Check back through the archives for a great in depth look at his travels and experiences throughout Europe: from a Real Madrid soccer match, to cramming for exams like the rest of his peers, to a final pit stop in Scotland.
Language barrier: If you plan on doing a program in a non-English speaking country, most universities and programs will require that, at the very least, you take one semester of your destination language. Michael took Spanish for five years before going to Madrid, and even he found it difficult to catch up at the start. (Important to note for Spanish students: In the U.S. you often learn Mexican Spanish, but of course Spain will use Spanish Spanish, whose many dialects will sound quite different.) Make sure you plan ahead in your schedule for a language class if it's required; if you've taken it before, it doesn't hurt to brush up the semester or summer before leaving.
