Obama's increased spending

August 19, 12:20 AM

The Democrats' presumptuous nominee beat Senator McCain in fund raising for July, but Obama needed every penny, and more to cover the expense of his field operation:

The Obama campaign said over the weekend it raised more than $51 million last month, typically a slow time for fund raising. Sen. McCain reported $27 million in July donations.

Obama's fund raising has smashed records, but Obama's campaign is also spending record amounts. The Obama campaign ended the month with $65.8 million in cash, about $5 million less than it reported on hand June 30, excluding debt.

According to the Wall Street Journal, that suggests the Obama campaign's spending more than doubled month to month, to nearly $56 million in July from $25.7 million in June.

The Associated Press reports the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee started August with $96 million. That cash has allowed the Republican nominee-in-waiting to keep pace with — if not exceed — Obama in advertising, including $6 million during the ultra-expensive Olympics and three straight months of commercials in 11 battleground states:

McCain's overall advertising budget for August is expected to exceed $20 million, and, by the convention in early September, Davis said McCain is on track to spend some $60 million on TV expenditures.

The McCain campaign released a new ad on Friday in key states that criticizes Obama on taxes:

"Celebrity? Yes. Ready to lead? No," the ad says, with the Democrats' name chanted in the background and pictures of him before adoring crowds. The commercial claims that "Obama's new taxes could break your family budget," mean "higher prices at the pump," and are a "recipe for economic disaster."

'm not sure that Obama will profit in the end by breaking his promise to accept public financing.
