In a press conference held this morning at the Leesburg Police Department building, the Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force released its findings on crime in the area, the culmination of five years of study. This study is acknowledged by Congressman Frank Wolf to be the first of it's kind nationally.
The findings are generally positive, in that crime levels are well below national and state levels. Gang violence in the region, while slightly increasing, still makes up a very small percentage of all crime. However, the study also found that many risk-factors and indicators for increasing gang involvement and violence exist.
To help with this, law enforcement agencies have pledged to continue cooperation to combat crime throughout the region, as well as offering resources and job opportunities for at-risk youth and concerned parents.
The study also listed contributing factors to the region's low crime rate, such as " consistent law enforcement initiatives, strong law enforcement partnerships at all levels, enhanced prosecution efforts, and educational gang awareness training." It also helped that the high level of cooperation amongst all law enforcement agencies included common definitions of crime and problem areas. By being proactive in these endeavors, the task force hopes to keep the levels of crime in the region well below national levels.
