The Super Bowl ads seemed to stir up almost more controversy than the game itself. Yesterday I wrote about the commercials I thought were clear winners and losers. Here are my other top picks which just happened to fall into two general categories: drinking and hating your job.

Drinking:
The Pepsi ad with MacGruber, a skit from Saturday Night Live, put a whole new and funny spin on sponsorship. (Full disclosure here – I am not in fact sponsored by Coke, Pepsi, Sobe, or any other drink – but if I was, I’d charge much less than one million dollars for a commercial.) I actually think the soft drink commercial war was won by Coke. Their updated “Mean Joe Green” commercial with Troy Polamalu for Coke Zero definitely had me laughing as I remembered a “Coke and a smile”. The Coke Heist commercial was visually stunning with bugs working together to drink Coke. I truly enjoyed watching the “bottle” turn into butterflies and I was glad I could hit the replay button so I could see that again.

A special thank you goes to Bud Light for putting Conan O’Brien in bunny ears for a “Swedish” commercial. What can I say about it, except you need to see it.

Hate your job:
I took an informal poll of people I work with and we were split on the Career Builder ad. Some people hated it and some thought it was cute. But even the people that liked it admitted that they were glad they only had to see it once. If you didn’t see it, I’ll save you the trouble. It repeated versions of the same refrain over and over, “If you hate going to work… it may be time.” Let’s contrast that with the Monster.com ad that was much better. It showed an executive office with a moose head on the wall. Then it showed the tail end of the moose which was standing right over an employee. Haven’t we all felt like that poor employee? They didn’t have to say anything. We got it. Monster.com wins my vote.

What will I remember about the Super Bowl? Eventually I’ll forget the final score and the winning team, but Conan O’Brien in the bunny ears will stay with me for quite awhile.
