As an entrepreneur you are responsible for everything in your business. In the beginning, you are the marketing department, the sales person, the manager, the customer service supervisor and the accountant. You may have even more hats than just these. The question gets to be, who holds you accountable? Who do you check in with to make sure you are getting all that needs done, done?
Most entrepreneurs are self starters, or they wouldn’t have become self employed in the first place. However, the more you put on your plate the harder it is to keep up and get it all done. This is when an accountability buddy is a great choice. Some may choose to have a personal coach, life coach or business coach to check in with (visit www.averagetoawesomelife.com if interested in acquiring one for your needs), while others just need a friend who to keep them honest..
The trick here is to be creative. Whether you want to get fit at the gym or just get things on your things to do list done, I guarantee there are several people you already know who can help. Think of people you can talk to on the phone, send text messages or emails to. I have accountability buddies all over the world for different things. If I’m up at 9 in New York and my pal is up at 6 in California and we both are looking to drop a few pounds, then we schedule a time that we can go to the gym “together” even though we are 3 hours apart. We call each other on our way there to share what we are going to do and again when we leave to discuss what we did. Just because we don’t live in the same place doesn’t mean we can’t hold each other accountable.
There are things I get behind on with my work all the time, but I have a friend in Australia that is a great check in partner. Anytime I fall behind I just send her an email with my things to do list and ask her to hold me accountable until I tell her everything on it is complete. I know someone who is trying to get her degree while working full time so she sends me a text or an email every day to let me know how long she worked on her homework. Just knowing I’m going to call her if I don’t get an email or text is enough to keep her on track every day.
Now it’s your turn. Think of all the things you’ve been wanting to do and just don’t seem to get to. Then make a list of all the people you know that can help hold you accountable to get more done. Remember to be creative and think of people you know everywhere…even online. Posting a goal to a social site like, Twitter, Facebook or My Space, can be a great way to get a group behind you. So now, go get your accountability buddy, to help you reach all your personal and professional goals!
