Ski clubs offer great deals to their members, through discounts, accommodations, transportation and group activities. Each club is different so it’s important to review their philosophy, fees and rules to make sure it’s a good fit for you.
Some clubs are for singles, others for families and still others offer activities for both singles and families. Certain clubs specialize in racing, others focus more on recreation. If a club owns a cabin that can be a good way to secure inexpensive accommodation and meet like-minded people. Some clubs rent cabins at different places throughout the season.
If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area or Sacramento many of the ski clubs offer bus or ride-share transportation, which is handy if you don’t have a car, want to save gas money, or simply want to be “green”.
Fees range from none, such as SnowPals.org, to the Peninsula Ski Club, which charges $100/year. Most offer discounts for their members at various ski areas in the Lake Tahoe area, such as Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Sugar Bowl, Heavenly Valley, Kirkwood and more.
Be sure to check the rules and expectations established by each ski club. Snowpals.org is a loosely organized grass roots organization, while other clubs have lengthy lists of rules, work party requirements, and a rigorous application process. Many organizations have evolved since the 1950’s and are well established.
Check out a ski club in your area and increase the fun factor this winter. Websites for the various ski clubs can be a great way to meet people, save some money and obtain valuable information, such as weather, snow conditions and ski movie guides.
