One thing that I have noticed when visiting different areas of the world is how much easier it can be to have basic language skills that relate to the area you are visiting. I will never forget the first time I visited the United States as a graduate from college. I knew just enough to get a room at a local hotel in Chicago and maybe figure out how to get a good meal. Beyond that, I was stumped.
Fortunately I was able to find people who spoke Spanish to assist me. The experience however was that much less enjoyable because of the language barrier. After my trip I decided to get more training in English so that I could immerse myself in the culture.
I also another important fact. Whenever visitors from the United States came to visit Mexico, they too had the same trouble. So they had to rely on others who spoke English to get wht they needed. I wonder how much more they could have gotten from the local culture had they made more time to get accustomed to the language.
There are a great many sources out there to help you learn other languages, too many to mention here. II will only encourage you all to take the time to learn a second language. It can make your trip abroad so much better.
