Esquire comes up with some of the best scenarios for interviews. Instead of meeting cover subject Gerard Butler at a Hollywood coffee shop and discussing his past and future movie roles, Cal Fussman met Butler at his mansion. The catch, though, is that Fussman, having spent most of his life overseas with little appetite for American movies, had no idea who his interview subject was. The editors told Fussman that he was meeting "some guy named Gerry" and the gimmick works well: the resulting story is revealing, as if we too are just getting to know Gerard Butler for the first time.

FEATURES:

  • They Told Me To Ask For Gerry (Cal Fussman): Gerard Butler starred in 300 and The Phantom of the Opera. His movies have grossed hundreds of millions of dollars. That's him on the cover. You know, Gerry Butler...
  • On The Job:
    • The Paradox of the Truck (Chris Jones): Paramedics and what it means to have a bad day.
    • The Master Plumber and the Key to Civilization (John H. Richardson): Without pipes, we have nothing.
    • Let the Chicken Do the Work (David Katz): And other lessons from the chef who built the place.
  • Are You There, Jeb? It's Me, Tucker. (Tucker Carlson): With no obvious candidate to lead the Republican party, some are looking to Jeb Bush. Which is news to him.
  • What I've Learned: Francis Ford Coppola (Stephen Garrett): "I have more of a vivid imagination than I have talent."
  • Al Gore's Plan is Wrong (Bjorn Lomborg): A better way to cope with the changing climate.
  • How to Bake a Pie (Mary-Louise Parker): Helpful cooking tips from a Woman We Love.
  • The Long Walk (C.J. Chivers): Forty hours on patrol with Company B through a Taliban stronghold in the mountains of Afghanistan, near the Pakistan border. This war — and its future — as you've never seen it.
  • 57 Things That Haven't Happened Yet (But Will Soon): Apple season, women in flannel, a new Zune. A brief guide.

ALSO INSIDE:

  • Three pieces of clothing you can wear all year; Barry Sonnenfeld on headsets; David Wondrich on tequila; Mehmet Oz on Kentucky Grilled Chicken; Shantel VanSanten tells a funny joke; Stacey Grenrock Woods answers questions on immaculate orgasms and conjugal visits; things that this magazine can do that a Kindle can't; a conversation with Jeff Daniels; the best live music; a movie review from a national security expert; twelve designers' new collection; new ideas about how ; and more.
