Brightblack Morning Light are a definite one-trick pony, but it's a good trick: they make long, stoned country-folk slow-burners anchored by Fender-Rhodes and horns. The sing about holograms, buffaloes, oppression and rainbows. Their just released third album Motion to Rejoin sounds a lot like their self-titled second album and for that matter most of their songs sound the same. Still, I'm loving Motion to Rejoin. Maybe it's because Brightblack have a nifty, unique niche. They sound like Dr. John's brilliant first album meets Tindersticks with a splash of the doom-jazz collective Bohren and the Club of Gore. It's an excellent autumn weather, sky-is falling album. Check it out.
