Winter Surfing.
The best winter beaches in Puerto Rico for wave action are in the cities of Aguadilla, Rincon and Isabella.
These towns are on the northwest corner of the island and serviced by the Rafael Hernandez Airport in Aguadilla on the former Ramey Air Force base.
Each town offers ratings for surfer's experience and skill levels: High, Medium and Low. Bottom conditions vary from sand, to reefs or a combination of both. Check out events information from the surfing association.
The city of Isabel on the north skirts the Atlantic Ocean home to two well-known surfing areas. Jobos, a hot surfing town, offers great action from August through May, a reef bottom for surfers of Medium skill and experience. Middles, a reef bottom, is rated for riders with High skills.
The city of Aguadilla, where the airport is located, has three excellent surfing beaches. Crash Boat/Gas Chambers is active from December to March, with a sandy bottom for High skilled boarders. Wilderness, and Surfer's Beach are both active from September through May with reef bottoms for Medium skills.
The city of Rincon, THE PLACE, that hosted a world surfing championship, offers four surfing beaches. Tres Palmas for the High skilled boarders with a reef bottom October to April. Domes for Medium skills from September to May with a reef bottom, Marias, October to April for Low experience with a reef bottom and Sandy Beach October to April for Low skills with a sandy bottom.

For friends and family accompanying surfers, don't despair. There are swimming beaches and areas close to the surfing beaches. Balneario Anasco beach is the same as the Tres Palmas surfing spot or tour the Rincon Lighthouse for whale-watching or visit Mayaguez Zoo.
For a spectacular view of the Rincon Lighthouse, a short walk to three surfing beaches and a place to crash with like-minded surfers, try the apartment offerings at Fish Eye View Apartment Rentals or check the Internet for local town listings. Remember the closer you are to the beach, the less hassle of travel and parking especially when winter tourist season picks up.
