Durango, Colorado was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in 1880. On August 5, 1881, the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad arrived in Durango. Construction on the rails to Silverton began that fall. Eleven months later in July 1882, the D&RG finally reached Silverton, and trains hauling passengers and freight started immediately. Over the next twenty years, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad faced and had overcome many devastating challenges. In the latter part of the 1960's it was registered as a National Historic Landmark, and as National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

Throughout the 1980's the D&SNGRR was focused on the scenic tourist railroad industry. Engines and coaches were weatherized to survive the winter, ten thousand ties were replaced and locomotives were returned to service. In 1985, the D&SNGRR purchased the Silverton Depot.  By 1986, there were four trains running to Silverton and a fifth running to Cascade Canyon Wye.

For 127 years, the Durango & Silverton Historic train has been constantly running, carrying passengers through the breathtakingly beautiful San Juan National Forest. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad operates some of the oldest passenger cars in existence today.  The locomotives that pull the train today are 1923-25 vintage maintained, are 100% coal fired-steam operated. The coaches have bathroom facilities and are heated in the winter for passenger comfort. The scenic cars offer panoramic views (which are fabulous) and they offer concessions, snacks and beverages on every train.

You can also charter an elegant 1880's coach for a special occasion. They are rented exclusively to the booking party. Each car is connected to the end of the train and there is no walk through traffic. Make reservations here for "winter" travel packages.

Check out the Polar Express Package, it is great holiday ride for the family, as you celebrate the magic of the Christmas spirit.

I want to mention The Palace Restaurant in Durango. Make this a priority while visiting Durango.  It is a fabulous pace to relax with a cocktail and the food is phenomenal. Try the Calamari appetizer!  I have the link listed below.
