Kata Beach, Phuket, Thailand
Cassandra James

Thailand is world famous for its beautiful beaches. With white and pristine sand, coconut palms and blue ocean, it's no wonder people come from all over the world for a Thai beach vacation. Thailand has thousands of beaches to choose from but these beaches are some of the top.

Karon Beach - One of the first beaches I ever visited in Thailand was Karon Beach on Phuket. Not only is Karon Beach a top beach, but it also has a cute resort town right next to it with many coffee shops, excellent restaurants, bars and nightclubs. The only thing to be wary of on Karon Beach is, if you're not a strong swimmer, stay close to the shore. There's a pretty strong current that can pull you out to sea if you're not careful. Also check out my favorite hotel on Phuket, Baan Karon Resort - awesome staff, great rooms and a lovely swimming pool - all for less than $30 a night.

Kata Beach - Kata Beach is right next to Karon Beach, and is much more low-key with nothing much around except white sand, fishing boats and coconut palms. Wonderful though if you just want to relax and be left alone. There are also many nice hotels around Kata beach, starting as low as 900 baht ($27 a night).

Lamai Beach - Lamai Beach is on another large Thai island, Koh Samui. Lamai Beach is one of Thailand's top beaches as it's beautiful, still quite unspoiled and quieter than some of the other Koh Samui beaches. Lamai Beach is also popular for diving, and with many dive shops next to the beach, you have a good choice of places to either rent equipment from or go out on a dive with. The sand on Lamai is fine and white, and the ocean is one of the bluest oceans I've ever seen. This top Thai beach is perfect if you want a low-key vacation, but still want a bit of fun. With a few nice restaurants and cafes around, you can also get some great food or a delicious fruit shake.

Maya Beach - Maya Beach on Koh Phi Phi is one of the most secluded beaches you'll find in Thailand. Surrounded by big limestone cliffs and with the only access to the beach by boat, Maya Beach makes you feel like you're on your own desert island. Maya Beach is best visited in low season though. It's definitely hotter, but there'll be a lot less crowds and you'll be able to enjoy the beauty of the place so much better.
