Native American tribes from throughout Arizona recently traveled to Pioneer Park in Mesa Arizona. Mesa Parks and Recreation hosted an Inter-Tribal Pow Wow, as a celebration of Native American Recognition Days. The park became a stage filled with music and dance for many of the twenty-seven tribes who live within the State of Arizona. Navajo, Hopi and Hohokam were only a few of the tribes represented. The singing and drumming filled the air around the city for a weekend. Many visitors to the local Farmers Market on Main Street were drawn to the beating drums in the park.
A variety of artists displayed beautiful jewelry, handicrafts and leather works for sale. A popular attraction was the turquoise and silver jewelry. Other vendors offered food including Indian fry bread and beverages. T-shirts, hats and blankets were also on sale in a variety of booths.
The weekend event brought attention to the diversity of Native American heritage and how it continues to be taught to the children. Young children were encouraged to dress in traditional garments and join in the dancing, to the enjoyment of all spectators and participants.
Many tribes were represented and more events are scheduled, such as:
