Fruits Basket, or Furuba, created by Natsuki Takaya as it is commonly abbreviated, is a manga t
urned anime about a family cursed by the Chinese Zodiac. The Sohma family suffers from the curse where thirteen members instantly transform into a respective animal whenever they are hugged by a non-family member of the opposite sex and if their bodies come under great duress.
The Sohma family struggles to keep their dark secret from outsiders, afraid of what might happen if they were to be discovered by the wrong person. However, everything changes when Tohru Honda comes along and discovers their secret. It is the love that Tohru gives to the Sohma family that opens their minds and hearts. With Tohru's actions of selfless devotion and her concern for others, she teaches the Sohma family how to live and accept themselves.
In particular, Kyo Sohma and Yuki Sohma are constantly at edge with one another. Due to the legend of the curse, the rat was responsible for the cat being late to a banquet. Yuki explains that was the sole reason he and Kyo spend so much time fighting. But Tohru begins to realize how alike Yuki and Kyo are. It is her love that begins to break the barriers separating the cousins, casting down the fence, and uniting them together through their differences.
To Kyo she gives the greatest love during his most grotesque form, showing him that one can be very different and yet there will always someone to love him. To Yuki, she gives him love enough to break down the cage he put around himself, freeing him from the darkness of his own mind.
