Frank Gehry-designed hotel at Marques de Riscal

There’s no better way to learn about wine than to stay at the vineyard.

Not only do you get to enjoy fine wine and food in a spectacular setting, you don't have to worry about the drive home later.

Dozens of European wineries offer upscale, luxury hotels on their premises.

ExperienciasyMas -  a Spanish publishing house that specializes in high-end hotels and vacations – has announced the winners of its 2009 Wine Hotel Awards, highlighting the best wine hotels and wine cellar hotels across southern Europe.

The range was limited to Spain, Portugal, southern France and Italy, but there’s plenty to choose from for the selective traveler.

Among the hotels awarded in this 2009 edition are four hotels located in Spain, three in France, two in Portugal and one in Italy.

Those situated in the Spanish peninsula include Marqués de Riscal in the Rioja region (www.marquesderiscal.com/), the Peralada Wine Spa & Golf Hotel (www.golfperalada.com/) in the Catalan region of Emporda, the Hacienda Zorita in the thriving Arribes del Duero area and the Read’s Hotel in Mallorca (www.readshotel.com/).

Portugal’s contribution includes the Aquapura Hotel in the Valle del Douro and the Casa da Calçada in the Oporto region.

On the French side, their characteristic chateaux among vineyards are represented by the Chateau de Bagnols (www.chateaudebagnols.co.uk/), the Chateau de Berne and Les Sources de Caudalie.

Finally Italy and its magnificent Hotel L’Andana (http://www.andana.it/en/hotel.php) in the region of Tuscany situated in a unique landscape of olive trees and vines. The hotel boasts an excellent gastronomical offer, featuring renowned chef Alain Duccase.
