A special light show celebrates the towers 120th

There’s no better way to celebrate a birthday than with a makeover.

That’s what Paris officials did in March to the emblematic Eiffel Tour, just in time for the Iron Lady to celebrate its 120th anniversary.

The Parisian tower has boasted several color shades since it opened in 1889 to rave reviews. It’s gone from Venetian red, yellow-brown, red-yellow to its current color, the so-called “Eiffel Tower brown,” which is in harmony with modern Paris.

A team of 25 specialist painters dangled on ropes to give the 1,063-foot structure a new glean just in time for celebrations to mark its birthday (www.tour-eiffel.fr/teiffel/uk/), ongoing through the end of 2009.

To help commemorate the tallest building in Paris (and third tallest in France), officials have unveiled a special exhibition through the end of December called “Tales of the Eiffel Tower.” The exhibit is on the tower’s first of three floors.

Starting Oct. 22 and continuing through December, the Eiffel Tower will be the focus of a special light show each night, at 8 p.m., 9 p.m., 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.  Some 400 special LED lights have been mounted on the tower to bring alive the light show.

A new restaurant on the first floor called “58” (named after the number of meters above the ground), opened in time for the 120th birthday bash. An evening set menu of 65 euros will fill your belly as well as provide sweeping views of the Trocadero. (http://www.restaurants-toureiffel.com/restaurant-tour-eiffel-58.html)

The Eiffel Tower remains as popular as ever and is said to be the world’s most popular paid attraction. In 2008, 2.9 million people visited the tower, helping boost the number of visitors above 245 million since it opened more than a century ago.
