No one could predict the weather on October the 17th, 2009. While so many take pride in their intuition, at this time, no one predicted it would be a northern like morning. With temperatures in the 50’s degrees at its highest, no one ever expected Savannah, GA, to be this chilly.
The possible reason why so many mystics and seekers find themselves on a voyage to our city might be the same reason why some films and books are written about it. The energy is electric, mesmerizing and contagious. The patchwork of characters from so many backgrounds build an almost kaleidoscope like picture of what Savannah has to offer and what she is yet to reveal.
The event drew a large crowd from all over the state and the Coastal Empire. It is estimated that close to 500 people witnessed the events celebrated there. Guest from as far as the state of New York and as close as Jacksonville, Florida were charmed and inspired by our city of Savannah.
The participation of a community as a whole served as a module and mold to other leaders throughout the state and inspired some to do more work in their local areas.
The Pagan community in Savannah is young, but resilient, bold, but mindful and regardless of what is thrown at them they seem to every year reinvent themselves and flourish in new areas as pioneers.
The day had a lot to offer from Belly dancing by Scarlett Gardner to henna artist Charlie Snyder of Three Ravens Henna, portraits artist, jewelry, incense, books and so much more. Patricia Telesco, Belladonna Laveau, Dusty Dionne and Michael Eugene Wilkes were extremely successful during their respective workshops which were well attended and popular according to the visitors of the event. Savannah Pagan Pride also welcomed new facilitators to this year’s event: Adeeb Shabazz, Brian Lovering, and Pratus Ater Lupus. The Germanic traditions were represented by Teresa L. Hedgewife, Bodi Mayo and Yngona Desmond which respectively offered workshops in such tradition.
Inner Journeys from Vidalia, GA, brought a wide variety of items to sell and as always was a crowd favorite. The Veil made its comeback to the Savannah Pagan Pride arena as well as the Correllian Church of Wicca from Beaufort, South Carolina.
For the first time Grey Wizardry School joined in the festivities along with Spiral Scouts of Savannah and CUUPS of Savannah.
The children’s presentation led by Sharon O’Sullivan and the Spiral Scouts was extraordinary and full of magic. The soundtrack of the festivities as some called it was lead by Dana from the CUUPS of Savannah group. Dana and the CUUPS group made everyone dance and move to the beat of their drums which were welcomed beats on a frosty afternoon.
Caroline Servis led the CUUPS group into a community ritual and Fred Twombly a practicing Pagan and active duty military provided the observance and recognition during the community ritual for all active duty Pagans in the military and veterans.
The Society for Creative Anachronism delighted everyone with their demonstrations and agility. Many of the children were entranced into a journey which some compared to a time machine arriving to the 17th Century Europe where chain link and swords were part of everyday wear.
A successful event and one for the records for the local Savannah Pagan Pride community. Be Loud Be Proud!
