ORLANDO'S FEATURED HOLE OF THE WEEK
The most unique layout in Orlando serves up several “hole of the week” candidates. But we turn to the par-four 10th hole at Mystic Dunes Golf Club to kick off this weekly feature on the Orlando Golf Examiner page.
The 10th defines the term “risk/reward.” Designer Gary Koch distinctly frames both the safe play and the gambler’s route.
With a helping wind, big hitters will be tempted to pull out the big dog and let it feast. With the hole playing in the 290- to 325-yard neighborhood there is good reason for drooling. Koch tempts you with an opening in front of the green. A long, straight drive could deliver big rewards.
However, consider these points:
1) The three small bunkers guarding the left front of the green pack a lot more pain than is apparent to the naked eye. They are deep, and they are set into a bank that can lead to a blind escape.
2) If you happen to just carry those bunkers, don’t rejoice. A nasty natural area could devour your golf ball.
3) A ball that misses slightly to the right ends up in a collection area.
4) And then there’s the green. Odds are you haven’t seen a putting surface like this one. There are three distinct levels, each defined by a large mound. The proverbial elephant is buried under each level, along with his wife and kid. Needless to say, you’d best find the proper level with your approach shot, be it from the tee box or the ample bailout area on the right side of the fairway.
It is a wonderful golf hole, full of opportunity, challenge and a variety of choices. Of all the exciting holes in the Gary Koch design at Mystic Dunes, this is my favorite.
Mystic Dunes Resort and Golf Club is located on CR 545, just minutes from the world renowned attractions off highway 192.
