Last month Rafael Ellwanger, Louisiana's most senior black belt called Marco Macera, "one of the best guys in the state" as a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitor. With more than 20 Mixed Martial Arts fights, Marco has been participating the sport for better than twelve years. Last month Macera achieved the pinnacle of the sport and recieved his black belt from Carlos Gracie Jr.
Macera no longer fights in MMA but when he did he fought some of the best including Strikeforce's Robby Lawler, to who he lost when he was just nineteen years old. Currently Macera is one of the few competitors in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to fight and get paid as a grappler. He is currently sponsored by Hybrid gear and come January will begin his training for the Pan American Championships in California. The MMA examiner decided to check out the hybrid gi website and found quite an interesting yet developing site with sort of snazzy new age type music and an unusual combat sports type them at http://www.hybridgi.com
At POWER MMA, Macera serves as a coach for adult level Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. With a class that averages twenty to thirty students he is one of the most popular coaches at the gym. Marco has earned the respect of his students, "the guy is scary. I am bothered by how damn heavy he feels when he is on top," says Shamus Rohn, who is among the strongest and best conditioned athletes at POWER MMA.
Carlos Mena, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu blue belt and part owner of POWER MMA says of Marco, "his experience and knowledge is extensive. The level of our guys who have worked with him has really improved."On November 14th, Marco's students from POWER MMA will be competing in the Louisiana Open Championships at Ponchatoula High School. In addition to the gi and no-gi divisions the tournament will also hold a Youth X-treme MMA division.
Also working with Macera are several amateur MMA fighters including Eddie Gonzales, Blake Dufour, and Brian "the Platypus" Perry. Perry, who is scheduled to fight in RMMA on November 20th, has what Macera calls a "very aggressive" style of grappling and striking and he predicts victory.
