Here is a Top 10 list of things that I will be looking to cover in the first few months as the MMA examiner.  My hope is that my readers will contribute ideas for additional stories related to these topics so that the public can get a better understanding of the sport, the promotions, the disciplines, and the athletes engaged in the sport today.

One. The UFC.  The Ultimate Fighting Championship is of course the Mecca of the sport and with several Louisiana based athletes fighting in this promotion including Pat Barry, Rich Clementi, Melvin Gulliard, Tim Credeur, and other up and coming fighters.

Two.  The local athletes and gyms and associations.  There are a lot of local athletes, both amateurs and pros who give their all to this sport.  There are many high level instructors in the New Orleans area teaching at places like Gladiators, POWER MMA, Gracie Barra Northshore, Machado MMA in Metairie, Anconas Gym, and others.  Each of these gyms, teams, athletes, and coaches bring unique contributions to the sport and the competitive nature of the sport guarantees unique and occasionally controversial stories.

Three.   Other major promotions.  Mainly this is the Showtime effort called Strikeforce and the up and comers such as Adrenaline MMA, the XFC out of Florida, and the WEC (which is owned by Zuffa, the same people who own the UFC but which includes weight classes under 155 pounds.

Four.  The stars.  Charlie Radar is an excellent example of one such star from Louisiana.  A 10-4 professional, he has a good sized following and is a complete and well-rounded fighter.  Being a professional MMA fighter requires serious dedication and commitment to training and staying in shape.  We will be looking to bring you a behind the scenes window into this world.

Five.  The Amateurs.  These are the guys who make the sport happen locally and are the local heroes of the sport.  From one hit wonders such as Plaquemines cop Kevin Johnson to the stacked Team Envy coached by pro fighter Kelvin Doss in Slidell, these guys make up the heart and soul of the sport today.

Six.  The intersection with traditional martial arts.  What can I say, Tae Kwan Do programs are trying to figure this out and the Louisiana Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation tournaments are attracting record numbers of well conditioned and trained athletes to events.

Seven.  Conditioning.  This is everything from Kettlebells, to crazy workouts, to supplements, and the use of steroids in the sport.

Eight.  Local promotions and promoters.  Vary wildly and some are wild.  Enough said on that for now.

Nine.  The LA Boxing and Wrestling Commission and regulation of the sport.  As new rules develop we will keep you informed about any proposed changes in the sport. The Commission in Louisiana is actively involved in the sport and has actually done an excellent job today of helping to grow the sport around the state.

Ten.  The Results.  We will discuss specific fights and results and give some detailed analysis from those who know the sport best.
