Robyn Steward, a 23 year old woman with Asperger syndrome, spoke to
speech therapists, occupational therapists and physical therapists at the San Francisco Unified School District this past week. Robyn provides training to professionals who work with individuals with Asperger syndrome and other autism spectrum disorders.

Robyn’s believes that is better to learn from a person than a text book, and proved it with her lively presentation, telling her audience what it felt like growing up with Asperger syndrome.

She was bullied, called weird, retarded and made to feel that she was different every day of her life.

“I felt like a cow walking to slaughter each day I was made to attend school,” says Steward.

The florescent lights, the shining white floors, the chaos from children and the loud noises overwhelmed her to the point that she banged her head and screamed.

Robyn credits her mother for helping her become the happy, well adjusted and successful person she is today.

“My mom didn’t leave me alone. She engaged me, found ways to help me work through my challenges and made sure recommendations of therapists were followed.”

Robyn believes that every moment spent with speech therapists, occupational therapists and physical therapist helped make her brain more flexible.

“Robyn’s bigger than life sense of humor, her wonderful smile and her extreme honesty were refreshing,” said Karen Kaplan, Autism Spectrum Disorder Consultant and the creator of the Marin Autism Lecture Series.

Robyn is passionate about young people with autism spectrum needing to hear from others on the spectrum.

“They need to know who they are and how they are different. They need to know it is not okay to have to compromise their individuality”.
