The 18th annual A+ Awards Luncheon, which took place at the Georgia World Congress Center, celebrated the Atlanta community’s efforts in collaborating to promote excellence in schools. The partnership between King Middle School and After-School All-Stars has been recognized by the A+ Awards Judging Committee for promoting collaborative leadership in which students tap into opportunities for academic and personal growth, and enhance peer relations and emotional adjustment. As a result, King Middle School has had the honor of sharing the Summa Cum Laude Award, one of the A+ Award categories, with After-School All-Stars. The criteria for the award was that the partnership needed to exist for at least 5 years and must demonstrate measurable results that have impacted the school’s objectives for students, staff, and parents, which have been met by this alliance.

The A+ Awards Luncheon was sponsored by the Atlanta Partners for Education, a joint program of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and the Atlanta Public Schools. The mission of the Atlanta Partners for Education is to enhance and improve the level of academic achievement for students in the Atlanta Public Schools by establishing and maintaining high quality partnerships. By identifying the needs of the schools based on their School Achievement Plans, the Atlanta Partners For Education works with the community and partners to achieve mutually agreed upon goals and objectives that support student success.

Atlanta Public Schools is being transformed into a “world-class” school system using nationally proven reform models, facility upgrades, and business operations redesign. Atlanta Public Schools’ standardized test scores have risen, and this is reflective of the schools that are served through the After-School All-Stars program, which are all APS schools, as they have all met “Academic Yearly Progress.” All of this is made possible through time and resources that have been generously donated from a group of partners.

The Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce is a coalition of leaders and organizations that tackle major issues in the community. Areas of focus for the Chamber include transportation, economic development, environmental conservation, and education. The Atlanta Public Schools Committee of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce works to help students achieve higher scores, establish alliances between schools and businesses, and reform school by introducing new concepts to use in the classroom and helping to recruit teachers.
