Enrichment activities have always been the backbone of After-School All-Stars. For instance, the students of Parks Middle School celebrated Valentine’s Day with a dance. Also, boys at The B.E.S.T. Academy had a chance to play baseball. The cooking classes have been very popular, particularly at M.L.K. Jr. Middle School and the B.E.S.T Academy. Kids from both Parks and King went skating, one school going to Metro Skates and the other going to Cascade Family Skating. Moreover, a D.J. came to King Middle School to perform at the 8th grade social. Many of the schools, such as Harper-Archer Middle School and Brown Middle School, hosted reflection ceremonies to show appreciation to students that exemplified achievement in all aspects of After-School All-Stars. Trophies were given for leadership and attendance. One such trophy was for the category “After-School All-Star of The Year,” given to one person from each grade level.

It was a family affair. Students, along with their parents, enjoyed a night of the arts. Starting with dinner and then on to the theatre. Some families enjoyed The Lion King Broadway production at the Atlanta Civic Center while others traveled the Yellow Brick Road with the WIZ at North Atlanta High School. What a night for the All-Stars!

Who would have thought National Geographic could make learning so fun….All-Stars students enjoyed the life size sea creatures in the movie Sea Monsters at the Fern Bank Museum.

The BEST Academy sped their way to see Speed Racer at the Regal Cinema...FUN..FUN...FUN

Field trips have played a significant role in providing both enrichment and educational opportunities for students that participate in Atlanta After-School All-Stars. Students from B.E.S.T. went to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site to learn about civil rights leaders such as Rosa Parks, Mahatma Gandhi, and Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. The boys from B.E.S.T. also saw some behind-the-scenes coverage of news at the CNN Center and learned about aquatic life at the Georgia Aquarium, which holds eight million gallons of water to provide habitat for species such as Australian sea dragons, Japanese spider crabs, and beluga whales. The World of Coke, which is right next to the Georgia Aquarium, was visited by students from Carson Middle School, who had a tour of production lines that show how products are made and a Pop Culture Gallery featuring artists such as Andy Warhol and Steve Penley. The Mustangs of Parks Middle School had a wild time at Wild Adventures, a theme park that gave them the chance to choose from various rides and attend concerts, including a performance from the Parks Middle School band and chorus.
