Philadelphia is a veritable melting pot of hundreds of different cultures and one of my favorite places to eat is the food court at H Mart in Upper Darby. You may not be able to fly to Japan, China, or South Korea but you can enjoy their cuisines all in one place.
My favorite item in the entire food court are the king dumplings from Jung Ma Roo. In this case “king” is used as an adjective to connote the large size of these dumplings (like “magnum” is used to describe an extra large bottle of champagne or extra large gift wrap for your boyfriend).
The dipping sauce is a mixture of soy sauce and rice vinegar and provides the perfect salty, slighty acidic and sweet compliment to the steaming hot bun stuffed with pork, cellophane noodles, cabbage and aromatics. Despite the large size, I have been known to house four in one sitting.
Perhaps you are looking for something a bit lighter, the sushi counter across from Jung Ma Roo offers affordable sushi, sashimi rolls and hwe dub bap (Korean rice bowl with vegetables, vinegared red pepper paste sauce and assorted raw fish). In addition there is an abundance of noodles of every shape and size in soups (cham pong- spicy seafood noodle soup), heavily sauced (cha jang myun – thick noodles smothered with black bean sauce), or old favorites like chow mein. Whatever strikes your fancy, the food and atmosphere of the food court really do bear a striking resemblance to any food court you would find in Asia (or at least the ones I’ve been to…).
This could be the best deal in Philadelphia, a tasting tour of Asia for under twenty bucks.
