One of the best ways to stay young is to surround yourself with young people. Seniors citizens have a wealth of wisdom and knowledge to share, a listening ear, and often the extra time to volunteer in the community. Being actively involved in activities outside your age range also provides the opportunity to stay connected...giving you that 'warm, fuzzy' feeling. One such opportunity to sign-up and volunteer is the Ellicott City Kiwanis Club for their November pancake breakfast and craft fair this Saturday, November 7.

The Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City has been serving the community for over 60 years. The club started the youth baseball program in the County when the members served as coaches for the teams their children played with. They used the property owned by the club which had the original name of Wallas Park. Mr. Wallas donated several acres of ground to the club with the express condition that it be used for the youth of the County.

This November marks the 8the year for the pancake breakfast held along with a holiday craft fair and entertainment book. Fundraising efforts support the club's mission. 100% of money raised through community fundraisers go directly back into the community in various forms of support (scholarships, charitable contributions, etc.), says the club's vice-president Kennette Mitchell.

Some of their achievements include the introduction of Youth Baseball in Howard County, starting the music program in the County high schools, donating a town clock for Ellicott City, co-sponsoring a computer lab for youth, establishing a $14,000 scholarship, establishing -in 1995, a clinic in the neo-natal section of the Howard County General Hospital. This program provides assistance for the newborn and also helps provide a program for nursing mothers.

Over the years, member's children grew out of that program, which later became the Howard County Youth Program (HCYP) and they continued to use the property at no cost to them. The Kiwanis club purchased additional acreage until they owned about 25 acres. This provided space for many ball fields. The park was renamed Kiwanis-Wallas Park. The property was sold to Howard County and the proceeds from investments of the sale continue to fund the many services and organizations today.

The club also started the music program that is in the high schools today. Members originally furnished instruments to students at Howard High school so they could learn music. That program later became the music program in the schools today.

Additionally, a scholarship was founded to provide a $10,000 scholarship to a graduating senior from one of the County high schools. That amount was increased to $12,000 as tuition costs increased. The amount of the scholarship was again increased to $14,000. That scholarship program continues today.

In the year 2000, the club donated a town clock to the County. The clock is located on the corner of Main Street at the historic B&O train station. The Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City is very proud of it's contributions to the community in the past and will continue to serve in the future.
