Antonio Banderas told Ellen DeGeneres that reports of him threatening wife Melanie Griffith with divorce are completely false. He said she entered rehab on her own accord because she was concerned about her own resolve after having to take painkillers for more than a year following a severe ski injury that required two surgeries.
In an interview that airs Wednesday on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Banderas said:
What happened, she was clean and sober for six years. She had a crash skiing in Aspen a year-and-a-half ago and she went through three operations in her knee. She [was] obligated to use narcotics. In March, she came to me and said, ‘I’m feeling a little bit weak in my determination for this.'
The whole family supports her in her efforts to deal with addiction, Banderas says.
I’m very proud of her."
He hopes other people will be inspired to get help.
There are a number of invisible heroes working in AA all around the world. I just say to families, don’t get embarrassed, just confront this problem head-on. And don’t hide from that because there is a beautiful gift at the end of this tunnel and it is [getting] the person you love back.”
