It's not always easy to recognize celebrities when they're not all glammed up for the red carpet, but there's no mistaking a star-worthy body in a bikini.
Beach homes
Stars live mostly on three Malibu beaches: Carbon Beach, Broad Beach and Malibu Colony. You've seen the gorgeous aerial view on "Two and a Half Men" -- and that's nothing compared to the close-up view of Hollywood hotties in bikinis.
Unfortunately, the backsides of the stars' huge "cottages" completely block the view -- and access -- to the beach.
But you can still get there, if you know how.
Malibu's beaches do not belong to the stars, no matter what their security guards tell you. All 27 miles of beach belong to the public. Seven miles are completely public and the other 20 are public up to the high tide line. According to California's coastal access laws, you do have the right to walk on every beach in Malibu -- even in the überprivate Colony -- as long as you get there via public access routes, which are few and well hidden.
Public access
The Zonker Harris Accessway -- named after the "Doonesbury" tanmaster -- is located between 22706 and 22664 Pacific Coast Highway. There also are public stairways in the 20300 and 19900 blocks of PCH, plus five access walkways between the 24300 and 25100 blocks of PCH (near Jane Seymour's house). The side door to the colony: You can wade into the colony at the eastern edge. Park at the Malibu Lagoon State Beach, at Cross Creek Road (across PCH from the Malibu Country Mart, where Halle Berry has been seen browsing the jewelry at Malibu Rock Star and Robert Downey Jr. stops in for lunch). A big house that looks almost like a giant barn marks the beginning of the Colony with a fence that extends past the house and onto the beach, all the way to the water line. There are signs warning that this is private property, but that's not true for the ocean or the beach up to the high tide line. You are legally entitled to step into the ocean and make your way past the fence to the Colony side of the beach, as long as you stay on wet sand.
Where to walk on the beach: Once you get onto the beach, stay near the surf's edge on wet sand. As long as the sand is wet, you're in the public zone. If you stray, you'll have security apes in your face. You don't want that. Seriously. They mean it.
Paradise Cove
Located at 28128 Pacific Coast Highway, Paradise Cove is a private beach with public access, which means anyone can go there but you have to pay. On the plus side, it's a beautiful beach where a ton of movies and TV shows have been shot -- and many stars are regular visitors. On the minus side, it'll cost you $25 to park your car or $5 to walk in. But it's worth it just for the eye candy (including shirtless surfer dude Matthew McConaughey when he's in town). You can even act like a star yourself and rent a small beach cabana.
Malibu Beach Inn
And speaking of paying for it, you can always get prime access to Carbon Beach by forking over $1175 a night for an oceanfront suite at the Malibu Beach Inn. Drop down to a basic ocean view room and you can catch a discount rate of around $500 a night. It might have been worth it on July 19, when "90210" hottie AnnaLynn McCord celebrated her birthday on the beach there.
