The rumors are true. The King of Pop will be back on stage this summer. Posters for Michael Jackson's "This Is It" 10-concert stay at London's O2 Arena were plastered all over the city's underground trains even before theThriller got to make his big announcement Thursday afternoon.
But the Times reported doubts about Michael's ability to fill the 20,000-seat arena for 10 nights, especially when the cheapest tickets are likely to cost at least £75 ($105). Seats in the VIP section are expected to go for £1000 ($1400).
The relatively small crowd that showed up to greet Michael at his hotel — "around 100 fans, and an eager Jackson impersonator" — was not seen as a good sign. The Times also cited Michael's child molestation trial, strange lifestyle and "disastrous comeback attempts" as part of the problem:
He suffered stage fright at the 2006 World Music Awards, held in London, and was unable to perform his smash hit Thriller. Another singer had to step in before Jackson shuffled on stage and got through just one verse and one chorus of We Are The World.
But wait a minute.
Everybody wrote off Britney Spears when she shaved her head, hooked up with her paparazzi stalker and got hauled off to the psych ward. She lost custody of her kids and was deemed unfit to manage her own affairs. She shuffled onstage at the 2007 Video Music Awards and was ridiculed for her performance.
What happened? Britney came back.
She won three VMAs in 2008, debuted a new album at #1 on the charts and is now on a successful concert tour that will hit 30-some cities in the United States and Canada before the eight-show finale at O2 in London this June.
So we're not counting Michael out. For one thing, he desperately needs the money. Sure he's weird, but come on now, he is the Thriller. He has done it before and he is capable of doing it again.
We're rooting for him.
P.S. Tickets could go on sale as early as next week at Michael Jackson Live, according to Music Examiner Linda Laban.
