Tony Award-winning actor Ron Silver, who played shrewd political consultant Bruno Gianelli on TV's "West Wing," died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday after a two-year battle with esophogeal cancer. He was 62.
Ron was once an avid Democrat who said in a 1991 interview with the Associated Press:
They say that Hollywood is sex without substance, and Washington is substance without sex, so maybe the marriage of the two is mutually intriguing."
But Ron did a political about-face after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. He became what he termed a "9/11 Republican" and spoke in support of then-president George W. Bush at the 2004 Republican convention. A month later he told the Associated Press his change of heart made it difficult to work in liberal Hollywood:
It's affected me very badly. I can't point to a person or a job I've lost, but this community is not very pluralistic. I haven't worked for 10 months."
He called "Fahrenheit 9/11" director Michael Moore "a charlatan in a clown suit" and narrated a rebuttal of the film called "Fahrenhype 9/11."
Besides "The West Wing," Silver also appeared on TV in "Veronica's Closet," ''Chicago Hope" and "Wiseguy." His film credits included "Ali," ''Reversal of Fortune," ''Enemies: A Love Story," ''Silkwood" and "Semi-Tough."
Ron recieved a Tony in 1988 for his performance in David Mamet's "Speed-the-Plow." He had been nominated in 1986 for "Billionaire Boys Club."
Ron was a terrific actor who will be missed.
