Taylor Swift is getting her fair share of post-award show apologies this year. First Kanye West, now Wynonna Judd. At Wednesday night's Country Music Awards, Judd said "it's too soon" for the 19-year-old "Fearless" artist to be named Entertainer of the Year -- an award Judd got when she was 22, the youngest until now.
On the red carpert before the show, Judd was asked what advice she would give Swift. Here's what she said, according to USA TODAY:
You want my honest comment? It’s too much too soon. Time is God’s way of keeping everything from happening at once. It’s just too much of a good thing too soon. ... Mom (Naomi Judd) and I rode in a car for the first year of our career to visit radio stations. There was a making of the star, there was a rising up, and the fans went with us. Now it’s over coffee breaks, the success, almost. ... It’s like the girl who wins an Oscar and she’s under 20. What do you do from here?”
Randy Travis agreed, telling People:
As a writer, she is a phenomenal talent. When you look at the body of work that she has written at the age when she came into this business, it's remarkable. It really is. But do I think that entertainer of the year might have been a little early? In my opinion, yes, for whatever that's worth."
But Taylor Swift didn't start her career yesterday. She's been writing and publishing songs for more than five years, since she was 14. She told reporters after the awards show:
I feel like it's been fast but it's also been a growth curve. I've watched the CMA Awards for as long as I can remember, and I got to come to my first one when I was 15. I know what it means to win a CMA Award. So I look at it from both ways."
On Thursday, Judd apologized for any misunderstanding. She wrote on her Wynonna web site that she completely supports Swift and thinks she deserves the award:
I understand that my comment about Taylor Swift’s Entertainer of the Year nomination came across as a negative statement. My intent was not to take anything away from her talent and contributions to the country music industry...all of which are truly unprecedented for an artist of ANY age. Taylor is a beautiful, hard working young woman that deserves the success she has had and I support her as an artist and as a woman in the business.
Taylor Swift won every category for which she was nominated:
Album of the Year: "Fearless"
Music Video of the Year: "Love Story"
Female Vocalist of the Year
Entertainer of the Year
Congratulations, Taylor. You most definitely deserve it.
