Sammy Sosa reportedly denied that he bleached his skin after photos of him looking ghostly white at the Latin Grammy Awards circulated around the Internet last week.
(Sammy Sosa is white as a ghost -- does he have Michael Jackson's skin disease?)
Former Cubs Care/Community Relations manager Rebecca Polihronis, who talks frequently with Sosa, told the Chicago Tribune that the slugger is "going through a rejuvenation process for his skin" and that it was the lighting that made him look white as a sheet in the photo.
But his wife Sonya's skin looks the same color as always in the photo (see photo above for comparison), so that's not a reasonable explanation.
Polihronis insists it's just the photo and a little TLC for his face:
He is in the middle of doing a cleansing process to his skin. The picture is deceiving. He said, 'If you saw me in person, you would be surprised. When you see me in person, it is not going to seem like the picture.'
People who saw him in person did not react the same way. He can't believe it is such a big deal."
The big deal is that his skin looks a dozen shades lighter than his wife's in the photo -- and Sosa won't cop to it. He has the right to do whatever he wants with his skin, but he needs to be honest about it when he shows up at a public function looking so different.
Polihronis said Sosa has always been concerned about his skin and uses a moisturizer every night.
He was doing a dermatological skin process after years and years (of playing baseball) in the sun. It did come out looking weird (in the picture)."
The Tribune pointed out that laser rejuvenation can turn discolor the skin lighter or darker.
Why doesn't he come out and say it? It is important to people of color to know that he is not purposely trying to look whiter.
