Robert "Joe" Halderman was not trying to blackmail David Letterman, his lawyer says. He was just hard-selling a book and screenplay option whabout the late-night talk show host's sexual exploits with women who worked for him.
Defense attorney Gerald L. Shargel filed motions in the State Supreme Court Tuesday morning, asking for the charges against his client to be dismissed, according to a New York Times report. Shargel told reporters:
This was a commercial transaction. It was nothing more.”
Halderman's defense is that he was merely writing a book/screenplay about Letterman's sexual affairs and he offered Letterman the opportunity to buy all the rights to it for $2 million -- and then Letterman could have kept it quiet.
But Letterman's lawyers call that pure hogwash. Daniel Horowitz told reporters outside the courthouse:
"This is anything but a legitimate business treansaction. ... It's classic blackmail, no matter how Mr. Halderman's lawyer wants to dress it up."
