Cedric the Entertainer was first to speak to the crowd of more than 7,000 who had gathered in the House of Hope on Chicago's South Side for Bernie Mac's memorial service on Saturday.
"This dude is a very, very popular guy," he said. "You know y'all were like, 'Let me get four tickets to the funeral!' He's still the hottest ticket in town!"
The Chicago Tribune described the tribute as "part late-night Saturday comedy show, part early morning Sunday church service." That's just about right for Bernie.
On a serious note, Steve Harvey — who starred with Bernie in his classic hit film, "The Original Kings of Comedy" — talked about Bernie walking with Jesus and said, "I'll see you soon, Bernie." Then he looked up and said, "Well, I don't want to see you too soon."
Bernie's friends who were able to attend included Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, Salli Richardson, Chris Rock, Tom Joyner, Juwan Howard, Ali LeRoi, Mike Collier, Bruce Bruce, George Wallace, Mayor Richard Daley and Rev. Jesse Jackson.
So long, Bernie. Keep a light on for us.
