The list of celebrities who have endorsed Republicans in the primary campaign is a fairly short one. Kelsey Grammer, Adam Sandler and Ben Stein gave money to Rudy Giuliani way back then. Chuck Norris donated to Mike Huckabee once upon a time.
But what celebrities support the guy who will be on the ballot in November, John McCain?
We went to WikiAnswers to find out. The answer field was blank.
So we went to Yahoo Answers. Another resounding zero. The answer there came in the form of a question: Why don't celebrities support McCain?
Finally we Googled "celebrities who support John McCain." And there we found the entire list. Heidi Montag.
We hate to say it, but that's definitely not going to be enough to make a celebrity out of McCain's wannabe daughter Meghan McCain, no matter what she posts in her blogette.
At one point, candidate McCain, enthralled by his celebrity endorsement, actually said, " I never miss an episode of 'The Hills.' "
That's a good one. As if anybody over 70 watches MTV.
UPDATE:
Normally we don't go back and update stories that are over a month old, but because so many people are still reading this one and leaving comments, we decided to add more.
It took a while for celebrities who had endorsed other Republicans in the primary to move over to McCain. That's not an opinion. It is a fact. (The same thing was true for celebrities who endorsed Hillary Clinton. It took them a long time to move over to Obama. Some of them still haven't.)
One of our readers/commenters left a link to a Daily Standard article about a McCain fundraiser that took place in Beverly Hills two weeks after I wrote this article. The story, by Stephen F. Hayes, was entitled "Celebrities for McCain: Out of the closet and into the spotlight."
After attacking Obama for being a celebrity, one had to ask why the candidate would himself be going to a party in Beverly Hills. The author's answer was straightforward:
John McCain was here for the same reason Willie Sutton used to rob banks: That's where the money is.
McCain, who has pulled even with Barack Obama due in part to his very effective attacks on Obama's "celebrity," spent the evening collecting checks from Hollywood stars or people who once might have fit that description.
That's the story of politics, whether your name is McCain, Giuliani, Clinton or Obama.
The Daily Standard story included a list of stars at the Beverly Hills shindig who *attended* the party. We don't know who *actually contributed* because that information was not released.
But here is a list of celebrities who attended McCain's Beverly Hills fundraiser, per the Daily Standard:
Dean Cain
James Caan
Jon Voight
Robert Davi
Lou Ferrigno
Adam Carolla
Lacy Chabert
Angie Harmon
Victoria Jackson
Gerald McRaney
Jon Cryer
Lorenzo Lamas
Kevin Sorbo
Patricia Heaton
George Newbern
Robert Duvall
Jerry Bruckheimer
And before conservatives further attack Hollywood celebrities, they might want to show some respect for the biggest political celebrity of all, the actor who became president: Ronald Reagan.
We're not judging Republicans in general. We're just asking conservatives to stop being hypocritical and mean-mouthed about celebrities.
