Everyone's giving the Emmy Awards props for finally recognizing basic cable — AMC's new "Mad Men" got 16 nominations and joined FX's new "Damages" as the first basic cable shows ever to get the nod in the Outstanding Drama category — but what happened to "Friday Night Lights" (NBC) and "The Wire" (HBO)?
They got snubbed. Again.
And they weren't alone. "Ugly Betty" and "Desperate Housewives" were not nominated either. OK, so those shows aren't "30 Rock" (top of the heap with 17 noms), we get that. But they are a lot better than "Two and a Half Men," which got 7 noms. Are they kidding? We went a whole year without realizing that tired sitcom was still in production.
Meanwhile "The Wire," "How I Met Your Mother" and "In Treatment" weren't even on the Emmy radar. Apparently there wasn't enough room on the list after the mandatory annual noms (7) went to "Boston Legal." We're huge Bill Shatner fans, but that show has become so P.R.E.D.I.C.T.A.B.L.E.
But enough crying. Here are the 2008 series nominees:
Drama Series: "Boston Legal," ABC; "Damages," FX; "Dexter," Showtime; "House," Fox; "Lost," ABC; "Mad Men," AMC.
Comedy Series: "Curb Your Enthusiasm," HBO; "Entourage," HBO; "The Office," NBC; "30 Rock," NBC; "Two and a Half Men," CBS.
Miniseries: "The Andromeda Strain," A&E; "Cranford" (Masterpiece Theatre), PBS; "John Adams," HBO; "Tin Man," Sci Fi Channel.
