U.S. authorities won't give Boy George's a visa for his American concert tour this summer — including a free New York concert in August — because he's awaiting trial in London.
"I am getting my life together and was really looking forward to performing in concert for all my loyal fans," the singer says on his web site, Boy George Live. "I love America and I am really sad that it appears that I am naot allowed to visit a place I have called home at various times in my life. But what has happened to me has nothing to do with the American people — they are kind people with big hearts."
The Culture Club frontman, whose hits include "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" and "Karma Chameleon," has pleaded not guilty to imprisoning a man at his London home last year. Boy George, whose real name is George O'Dowd, was charged in London last November with false imprisonment following a complaint from a 28-year-old man, police said. The incident happened in East London the previous April, police said.
The Boy is free on unconditional bail and is not barred from traveling as he awaits trial, but apparently that didn't impress U.S. immigration authorities.
He joins a number of popular British stars who have been denied visa entry to the U.S., including Amy Winehouse, who was not allowed to come into the country to accept her Grammy Awards earlier this year.
