A federal judge is allowing Wesley Snipes to remain free on bail until his appeal is heard and decided. The judge said he was "dubious" of Snipes' appeal arguments, but allowed bail anyway. Otherwise, Snipes would've had to begin his three-year prison sentence for tax evasion on June 3.
Snipes, who had been indicted on felony tax fraud charges, was convicted on three misdemeanor counts after failing to file returns or pay any taxes from 1999 through 2001. Prosecutors said he earned more than $38 million during that time period.
The day he was sentenced, Snipes' lawyers gave the IRS $5.2 million on his behalf.
In arguing for bail, the actor's lawyers said he is "actively engaged in resolving his liabilities with the IRS." Snipes is scheduled to meet with the IRS next week.
