Beat the Boredom Blues
Parents are constantly encouraged to spend time with their kids. One problem is that parents do not always know how to engage their children. Problem number two is that most parents get just as bored as their kids when they do the same things over and over again. Since kids do not come with a manual and some people are less creative than others, author Jodie Randisi has taken some of the work out of finding things to do with kids.
The owner of COWCATCHER Publications (http://cowcatcher.wordpress.com/) first published her book, 201 Things to Do When Children Say I'm Bored! - The Checklist and Journal for Busy Families, in 1992. Motivated by her desire to engage her own children in positive activities, Jodie Randisi began collecting ideas for things to do with them. In a very short period of time Randisi transformed, in her words, "from a frazzled mom into a publisher".

The activities and suggestions in 201 Things to Do When Children Say I'm Bored! - The Checklist and Journal for Busy Families are not complicated. The costs involved with most of the activities are minimal. Many of them do not require any planning ahead. Several of them do not require any materials or supplies. Randisi has simply provided prompts for creativity challenged parents that need a little nudge. An example of one of the activities found in the book is #41 Predict the End. Families are invited to watch a movie on DVD and stop it before it ends. Everyone watching is then asked to predict the end of the movie. To add to the fun it's suggested that awards be given for the best and worst guesses.
Completing the activities in 201 Things to Do When Children Say I'm Bored! - The Checklist and Journal for Busy Families can also result in keepsakes and a shared family journal. Activity #71 Photo Album Cartoon invites families to add captions to family photos to create a homemade comic book. Randisi's book contains both directed activities and open ended activities. There is a space on each page of the book for recording the date that each activity is completed if desired. Blank pages for journaling are provided in the back of the book for whatever each family may come up with while spending time together.
