What started as a supporting role ingredient now steals the scene in this all-liqueur cocktail. The inspiration for the Captain Shaddock the unique and seldom known Tagliatella Nardini, a grappa based liqueur. Ian Hardie, one of Huckleberry Bar’s prized mixologists wanted to find just the right flavor combination to showcase its unique fruit and herbal flavors. He uses Benedictine, one of the more famous bitter liqueurs created by monks from over 20 different plants and herbs, and Kummel, a car
away infused gin, Huckleberry makes their own using Beefeater. To this very spicy and herbal mixture of liqueurs, Ian adds grapefruit juice, pulling it all together and lending just the right amount of fresh sweetness and acidity to the complex earthiness. The result is a refreshing and smooth drink that is easy to love. It is an example of how the right ingredients masterfully combined create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.
Liqueur month is almost over, but luckily Liqueurs themselves have a long shelf life and are a great addition to any home bar. Just a splash can liven up an ordinary martini and be inspiration for countless new cocktails. Check your local liquor stores for flavors that you love and let your palate and imagination work together to create delicious new drinks.
