For those of you who are both literary and culinary, you may have attended Jonathon Safran Foer’s reading of his new book, Eating Animals, this evening at the Free Library of Philadelphia. I actually did not attend, but I did stumble upon this article written by Natalie Portman in which she claims, “Jonathan Safran Foer's book Eating Animals changed me from a twenty-year vegetarian to a vegan activist.”
As a vegetarian myself who is insistent on excellent cuisine, I’m not sure if I want to put myself through that torture. I can’t imagine giving up buffalo mozzarella or Sunday morning omelets, and something tells me that this book would give me a heavy conscience. However, for those of you who like to eat veg (or feel too guilty after attending the reading), I’d like to recommend Mi Lah Vegetarian, located at 218 S. 16th Street, right off of Rittenhouse Square.
Although the service can be hit or miss, the food is fantastic and can definitely satisfy your foodie cravings while ensuring no animals are harmed in the process! Particularly memorable is the tofu benedict, proving that kale can be done right without adding hunks of lard and settling once and for all that everyone can enjoy tofu.
It would be great to see more gourmet vegan cuisine, and this past weekend at the James Beard house may be indicative of its coming. Chef Richard Landau, of the rave reviewed Horizons, was the first chef to cook a vegan meal at the James Beard House. Ever. Too bad they don’t serve brunch!
