Bad things happen to good people, all the time, may it be death, injury, emotional pain, losing a job, losing a home, or heartache, they happen. It’s so hard to keep your faith and hope when afflicted by strife, but keeping your hope and faith is what must be done. John 16:33, Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." In this world we will have trouble, it will happen, bad things happen to everyone, but Jesus has overcome this world! Too many of us sit and constantly ask “Why is this happening?” when what we should be doing instead is giving it up to God. In the book of Job everything Job owned, all his family, and wealth was taken away, and he did not curse God. For being a true and faithful servant to the Lord, Job was blessed after all of his trouble with double of what he had.
What we all have to understand is according to God’s standards, no one is “good.” We are all tainted by sin, when we decided to sin was when bad things began to happen to everyone. 1 John 1:8 says “if we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” In all seriousness none of us even really deserves to be here, we all deserve to be in Hell, it is only by the grace of God that we are even allowed to be. Romans 5:8 says “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Sometimes bad things do happen to people who seem undeserving of them, but God allows these things to happen for His reasons. We have to remember that God is good, and that things happen to us that we just do not understand, but instead of being doubtful we need to be trusting. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding,” Proverbs 3:5.
Something my pastor said helps, he said “not everything that happens is God’s will, but everything that happens will be used for his purposes and plans.” In John 11, Jesus waited to leave for Bethany until four days after Lazarus had died and raised him from the dead. If Lazarus would not have died, he couldn’t have been used as the example for the disciples in helping them keep their faith that Jesus was going to be resurrected. Bad things happen, but it’s what you do in the face of these things that matters most.
