Friday, October 30, 2009 marked the event of the Samhain season in Tampa, FL. Tina McCabe and her husband Robert, owners of Magickal Happenings witch shoppe, sponsored the event to benefit Children’s Cancer Center here in Tampa. Witches, elves, garden faeries and wizards, both Pagan and non-Pagan alike, turned out to support this very worthy cause and indulge in some awesome Samhain/Halloween shenanigans. The high-end hors d'oeuvres were delicious and aesthetically pleasing. The perfectly seasoned shrimp, delicate crab cakes, cheese-stuffed jalapenos and generous cheese and fruit plate were only a few of the available foods that were a hit with those who had worked up a hunger on the dance floor. The energetic DJ was really spinning the dance tunes and everyone was demonstrating their unique brand of boogie-shoes. There were two pairs of professional dancers* who put on quite a show for those of us who, due to choreographical incompetency, preferred to be spectators for the dancing activities. The available bar had the makings of any and every mixed drink that you could imagine as well as your favorite beers and some very tasty chablis.
The Hilton Westshore was an elegant and perfect setting for this upscale ball, complete with a gorgeous ice sculpture in the front room. The smiling, stereotypical witch on her broomstick even seemed to be having a good time, seemingly unaware of her frigid status. Even if she did have somewhat of an icy stare, she was still really cool! *
After viewing the ice sculpture, ball-goers could go into the next room and browse the items available for the silent auction. Among the items were a two-night stay at the Hilton Westshore, a day of massage from a local masseuse, an autographed copy of “Growing Up Pagan: A Workbook for Wiccan Families”, a day of pleasure when an excellent chef in the area will come to your home and cook a delicious dinner for two (a $600 value!), a Pagan child’s heartwarming artwork and many other neat and desirable items and services. All proceeds, again, will benefit Children’s Cancer Center.
In yet another room, free readings were being given by several talented readers. Since everyone was so busy, I only had a chance to speak with one very sweet and responsive tarot reader named Bella. She also does readings for a reasonable fee at her store in the Big Top Flea Market and also through her home business.
All in all, this night was a huge success, drawing in several news crews to interview Tina about this event and her store. If you missed it this year, do plan on attending the Salem in Tampa Witches’ Ball next year; the fun and festivities were excellent and the attitudes and friendliness of the attendees, hosts and staff were remarkable. I already look forward to attending next year.
Blessings for a safe and magickal Samhain season!
