The Calgary Flames are off to a perfect season so far after posting a dramatic 4-3 victory against their chief rival, the Edmonton Oilers.

With two seconds left in the third period, Rene Bourque tipped a shot from Jay Bouwmeester to tie the game at 3. Then after killing off a Mark Giordano tripping penalty in overtime, the Flames were able to force the game to a shootout.

The Flames were then solid in the breakaway session. Olli Jokinen and Nigel Dawes both found the back of the net, while Miikka Kiprusoff, despite giving up an initial goal to Patrick O'Sullivan, was able to stop Ales Hemsky and Sam Gagner.

Other Flames to notch goals Thursday night included Dawes (his first as a Flame) and Rene Bourque. Bourque was involved in all three Flames' goals, notching one goal and two assists.

The Oilers received goals from Ethan Moreau, Lubomir Visnovsky and Ales Hemsky.

Captain Jarome Iginla had a strong physical presence, as he collected seven penalty minutes. Early in the second period, he tripped Sheldon Souray into the boards. Souray left the game with a concussion. Later in the period, he fought Oiler captain Ethan Moreau.

The Flames are currently 4-0 and post the best record in the National Hockey League. They will try to keep their perfect season alive Friday night as they host the Dallas Stars at the Pengrowth Saddledome.
