In the spirit of Halloween, it seemed fitting to write about  this aromatic and healing relative of the onion. In medieval times garlic was worn around the neck to keep werewolves at bay. Besides a crucifix or cross, garlic was used to fend off vampires. Braids of garlic were often hung in doorways to ward off evil spirits. Garlic is even mentioned in Egyptian times. Garlic's popularity has remained steadfast throughout the centuries for all its healing qualities.

Gilroy, California is known as the "Garlic Capital of the World."

"The Tibetans have ancient recipes against stomach upsets and constipation. They would crush garlic in a wooden mortar and add alcohol. They started with one drop, increasing the dose by one drop a day for ten days, then reducing the dose in the same way for another ten days." - www.hammergarlic.com

A Mohammedan legend related that "when Satan stepped out from the Garden of Eden after the fall of man, Garlick sprang up from the spot where he placed his left foot, and Onion from that where his right foot touched." - www.uihealthcare.com

Garlic is used in so many different cultures for medicinal and cooking purposes. Of course, garlic bread is a delicious side dish with any Italian cuisine. The odor is very pungent as a raw bulb. When garlic is reduced in cooking it enhances the flavor of any entrée. Another yummy way garlic can be consumed is in oil form.

By eating garlic on a regular basis you are actually helping your body in numerous ways to stay healthy and protect your immune system. Garlic has anti-aging qualities.  Garlic is an effective antibiotic and antiviral herb. Along with that, allium sativum (garlic) can reduce high cholesterol levels and lower high blood pressure.  "Studies have shown that eating less than an ounce of garlic a week can help lower your risk of certain types of cancer and a clove per day can lower your cholesterol in as little as four weeks." - Energy Times, March 2000

Garlic is also effective against;  systemic candidiasis, yeast infections and circulation problems because of the chemical compounds. It can also be used to treat wounds and infections.

So the next time you need to treat your body right consider garlic as an all around healing option.  The only side effect of garlic is "garlic breath". Good news though,  there are odor free garlic supplements that come in capsule form available at most local health food stores or online.

Always collaborate with your health care provider or qualified practitioner to let them know the benefits of garlic.
