Silent Discos are sort of what they sound like - quiet dance parties. People dance the night away to music played through headphones connected wirelessly to an FM transmitter. The very first Silent Disco appeared in a Finnish science fiction movie called Ruusujen Aika (Time of Roses).
This type of disco is popular at events where there might be groups of people with very different musical tastes. The basic idea of a Silent Disco is that two music channels are offered. Technically, this means one group of people could spend the evening doing polka on the very same dance floor as people who are rave dancing.
Some benefits of a Silent Disco include hilarity - people dancing full force to different tunes is bound to look ridiculous. It's also popular because it lets people have a dance party without disturbing anybody too much.
This kind of disco is currently a big hit in the UK, but it's spreading to Ireland, Germany, Uganda, and Canada. Maybe the U.S. is next! And specifically, maybe we'll see it happen up in San Francisco. Geeks should get excited about attending an event where wearing fancy headphones is a requirement!
