When I first saw Chris MacVittie aboard the Red and White Fleet's Sunset Cruise, I was a little bit skeptical. MacVittie is a tall, muscular man with a rugged, tough-guy visage. He looks like the kind of person who might be in a heavy metal or hard rock band. So it was a surprise when he pulled out an acoustic guitar and shyly introduced himself to the audience.
I stopped being skeptical when MacVittie started to sing. He has the voice of an angel - breath takingly sweet, emotive and melodic. MacVittie can really sing. Combined with simple but catchy folk guitar, he is an extremely gifted performer. His original songs are pretty and focus on traditional, romantic themes such as being in love, or the loss of a great love. It is the perfect kind of music for enjoying a sunset cruise.
While MacVittie's original songs are impressive, his covers of popular tunes are equally good. Something I always look for in covers of famous performers, is whether the covering artist makes the songs his own. MacVittie offered spellbinding interpretations of the songs he selected (including Beatles and Smokey Robinson numbers) and altered the style of each song to suit his own unique romantic folk pop voice.
