Broken Lights is the third album from Brookeville, the solo project of critically-acclaimed band Ivy's co-founder Andy Chase. The album is similar to the first two albums in terms of its high production quality, precise musicianship, and song writing.
Beyond that, Broken Lights represents a bit of a departure from Brookeville's first two albums. Where albums "Wonderfully Nothing" and "Life in the Shade" explore dreamy, experimental soundscapes using a variety of musical flavors, Broken Lights opts for one, exceedingly mellow style. The result is that the album doesn't have a lot of layers to it - you either enjoy the languid, melancholy tone or you don't. It's less of a roller coaster ride than the first two albums.
One of the best elements of Broken Lights is the album theme and lyrics. Most songs deal with the loss or breakdown of a romantic relationship. The verses in each track are written in a direct, thoughtful way. For example on the album's radio single "Great Mistake" the lyrics are "If you really love me you would let me make the great mistake of leaving you." The line aptly describes the mixed emotions that come when one feels lost and restless in a relationship.
The only drawback to Broken Lights is that the songs do not pop out at you. The impressive lyrics are lost in music that, while well crafted, does not have the same exciting, attention grabbing feel of Brookeville's earlier works.
