Andy Barr, a potential Republican challenger to Rep. Ben Chandler (D-Versailles) in Kentucky’s Sixth Congressional District, proved he has the ability to raise money and pose a serious challenge to the incumbent.
According to a report in The Hill, Barr raised over $186,000 in the three-week period after forming his exploratory committee. Chandler raised $160,000 in the same time span.
Barr has not officially entered the race, but formed the exploratory committee in late September to test the waters.
If he ultimately decides to throw his hat in the race, the Lexington lawyer and part time Constitutional Law instructor at the University of Kentucky will run on platform of limited government, individual freedom, personal responsibility and a strong national defense. Barr says he opposes higher taxes, and that he will fight to balance the federal budget and cut wasteful spending. He also opposes government health care, advocating free market reforms instead.
“As I travel around the Sixth Congressional District, the message is clear: Central Kentuckians are ready for a new kind of leadership in Washington. They want a Congressman who will be a check and balance to the party in power. They want leadership that will stop the out of control spending, prevent a government takeover of our healthcare system, and protect Kentucky jobs. Most of all, they want a representative who is responsive to their concerns and shares their values,” Barr said on his campaign Web site.
Barr’s potential candidacy is one to watch closely. He may well provide a viable liberty minded alternative to Chandler.
